Urs P. Twellmann
Sculptor, Berne.
I remember very well how, as a young artist, I sneaked into the various ‘no-entry’ marble quarries of Carrara, and how I stood in awe and wonder inside these most impressive caverns. A few years later I met sculptors in New York who worked on large Italian marble blocks in workshops on the 6th, 10th and even 12th floor of a building. The marble blocks were so heavy that the weight of them proved almost too much for the large goods elevators. To see someone work on a block of marble in the heart of Manhattan was totally surreal for me. I thought that a sculptor should not only study the material he is working with, but also know its origin…and this he can do nowhere better than in the immediate vicinity of the quarry. It is wonderful that this is possible in Switzerland and, hopefully soon, the Centro Internazionale di Scultura in Peccia will be able to offer a studio on a short-term basis to artists from all over the world.
